What is Urethane Casting?

Urethane casting is a molding process that uses silicone molds and urethane (polyurethane) materials to produce high-quality, production-grade plastic parts. Also referred to as cast urethane, silicone molding, or RTV molding, this process is widely used for rapid prototyping and batch manufacturing, offering an efficient solution for producing parts with lower costs and shorter turnaround times. Compared with traditional manufacturing methods that require costly and time-consuming hard tooling, the primary advantages of vacuum casting are its flexibility, speed, and affordability. In cast urethane production, silicone is typically used to create the mold. A master pattern is first manufactured through CNC machining or 3D printing, and liquid silicone is then applied to form an accurate mold that replicates the final product. This process is particularly suitable for prototyping and low volume production, providing functional parts for testing, market exhibitions, product validation, or pilot runs.

Our Urethane Casting Process

At AXIPRECISION, our urethane casting services follow a quality-focused process designed to deliver accurate, consistent, and production-ready parts. Our vacuum casting process consists of four main steps, from creating the master pattern to final finishing.

Creating the Master Pattern

The urethane casting process starts with a precision master pattern based on the customer’s CAD design. Depending on the project, the master pattern can be produced through precision CNC machining or 3D printing using SLS or SLA technology, providing an accurate reference for creating the final parts.

Making the Silicone Mold

Liquid silicone is carefully poured around the master pattern inside a vacuum environment to create the casting mold. After the silicone cures and solidifies, the mold is carefully cut into sections and the master pattern is removed, leaving a detailed cavity that accurately reproduces the original pattern.

Casting the Parts

Once the silicone mold is ready, its cavity is used to produce the final urethane casting parts. Polyurethane resins are mixed and preheated to approximately 40°C before casting. The resin is poured into the silicone mold inside a vacuum chamber and then placed in an oven for around 1–5 hours, depending on the part size and material. After curing, the resin part is removed from the silicone mold, producing an accurate and consistent replica. A typical silicone mold can produce approximately 20–25 parts before replacement is required.

Applying Final Finishes

The final step is to prepare the urethane casting parts for their intended application. Once fully cured, prototypes can be cleaned, painted, polished, coated, or otherwise finished according to the customer’s requirements. Finishing and surface treatment continue as needed until the project is completed and the parts are ready for evaluation, presentation, or the target market.
